Liberty City Post Office

The Post Office is an urban staple around the world that can create central area for communication, transactions, and social events. After analyzing the site a number of observations, like the colorful urban landscape, the food desert, and the presence of "concrete monsters", led to the decision to make the second program a fresh food market. This would supply more jobs for the residents of Liberty City and provide a healthy food resource.

The goal of this design was to create a new hub in Liberty City that identified with the Miami Art Deco culture. Art Deco was used as a source of inspiration in regards to materiality, color, and ornamentation. The floor plates that extend out emphasizing the levels, the exaggerated curves throughout the site, the smooth stucco walls, and the soft pastel pink hue of the building gives homage to the Art Deco movement. Art Deco is also known for its intricate detail in ornamentation which inspired the breezeblock wall.

Breezeblock walls have been used throughout the world specifically in tropical climates to deflect sunlight and aerate spaces. The main courtyard space of the building is surrounded by these walls to make the errands experience more enjoyable and relaxing. They are made of Florida limestone which not only gives an eye-catching detail for visitors to appreciate, but also can absorb rain water as it is porous. Additionally, the limestone is used for holding the greenery in the building.

This site is designed to be a space for and activated by the public which is accomplishes by engages both street sides. This building would be a landmark in the city that can provide jobs for the immediate population and boost the economy of the city.
